Welcome Message
We welcome both undergraduate and postgraduate students into the department of Management Technology. We offer a multidisciplinary programme that prepares managers in organisations to manage their technological fundamentals to create competitive advantage. It involves integrated planning, design, optimization, operation and control of technological products, processes and services. It is also the integration of policies and practices, application of organisational and leadership theories, communication processes and deployment of technological advances in the context of organisational growth and development.
The Federal University of Technology, Owerri, was established in 1980 primarily to ensure the technological development of Nigeria. The University has pursued this mandate with vigour. The School of Management Technology has programmes in Project Management Technology, Financial Management Technology, Information Management Technology, Maritime Management Technology, Transport Management Technology, and Management Technology.
Technology is the central and most significant element for effective operations management in today’s organizations. It is a body of knowledge used to create tools, develop skills, extract or collect materials that would substantially reduce human labour and significantly enhance the wellbeing of people. It is also the application of science (the combination of scientific methods and materials) to meet an objective or solve a problem. Therefore, Management Technology is the integration of policies and practices, organisational and leadership theories, communication processes and deployment of technological advances in the context of organisational growth and development. The undergraduate B. Tech. curriculum in Management Technology is the creative and innovative activities designed to expose students to learning experiences that would position them adequately for managerial tasks in public and private sector organisations. Management Technology is a multidisciplinary programme that prepares managers in organisations to manage their technological fundamentals to create competitive advantage. It involves integrated planning, design, optimization, operation and control of technological products, processes and services.
Furthermore, humanity is facing numerous environmental, social, economic, political, health, educational, conflict/war, religious and poverty challenges. This is where management comes in because the real difference between an organisation that achieves its goals efficiently and effectively and the other that fails to do the same is management. The short and long term devastating consequences hitherto facing humanity make the training of the 21st-century managers very imperative. This revision has, therefore, become very necessary to ensure that; (1) the science, technology and engineering components of the curriculum are satisfied and (2) students are exposed to knowledge, skills and tools needed in the 21st-century knowledge economy.
The department of Management Technology was carved out from the Department of Financial Management Technology in 2015. The current head of department (HOD) is the pioneer head since its existence. The name of the pioneer head is Prof Ihuoma P. Asiabaka (FNIM).
The philosophy is the belief that training in this discipline will develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, develop self-confidence, help to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of Management Technology.
To produce trained manpower in the field of Management Technology who are able to contribute to the management of the production industry and public institutions.
The objectives of the degree programme in Management Technology include:-
- To produce graduates with technological knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems in the management of industrial, commercial, public and other human organizations.
- To produce graduates with entrepreneurial spirit and skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems for re-engineering of the Nigerian economy.
- To develop in students, leadership and interpersonal relations skills for effective and efficient management of 21st-century organizations.
- To produce competent middle and upper-level managers who will contribute in planning, policy-making and management of organizations in the globalized knowledge economy.
- To establish linkages and partnerships with other national and international organizations engaged in education, research and development activities in the field of management technology.

Organizations use different forms of technologies for their businesses which have basic and critical effects on their nature, design and structure. In an organization, departments and divisions are developed around the equipment used whether it is for production, communication, information or control. The scope of technology that an organization can adopt or employ is vast, ranging from something simple, such as buying a personal computer with a word processor, to investing in the latest state-of-the-art computer-aided manufacturing machinery.
The B. Tech. (Mgt. Tech.) prepares the student for employment in any sector of the economy especially:
- Multinational Companies: Multinational companies engage in producing and selling goods or services in more than one country. The dynamics of international business created a great need for the evolution of multinational organizations. They include oil companies, oil servicing companies, IT companies, construction companies and financial institutions, among others.
- Public Utility Companies: Utility companies include all companies providing specific utility services such as energy, telecommunications, water and waste services among others. Utility managers face the challenges of increasing populations and uncertain environmental challenges. It is during these periods that the efficiency of the manager, staff, and equipment are put to test. Utility managers work with other officials to ensure that there are enough resources for everyone to use. They also collaborate with both public and private organizations during emergency situations and natural disasters. Management technology graduates will be trained to face these challenges
- International Organizations: Graduates of B.Tech. (Mgt. Tech.) The programme can also find employment in international organisations such as UNICEF, UNDP, WHO, UNESCO, World Bank, IMF etc.
- Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies: These are government establishments charged with specific responsibilities at the federal, state and local councils for efficient and effective service delivery. Public sector activities are rapidly expanding and therefore, ministries, departments and agencies require well-trained creative, innovative and talented managers. Management Technology graduates are needed to transform the public sector organizations.
- Large, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises: Few businesses can survive without cutting-edge technology. Management technology will help business owners to keep up with innovative products on the market to remain competitive. They must learn how to operate computers and business software to keep track of orders and invoices, load new software and install upgrades; have network computers and link them to multiple branch network. Bigger, more complex companies demand new tools to run and manage them. Indeed, improved technology and statistical-control tools have given rise to new management approaches that make even mega-institutions viable. Today’s business leaders are using highly sophisticated software to run their organizations.
- Self-employment: Self-employed people generally find their own work rather than being provided with work by an employer. Self-employment occurs across a wide segment of the world economy. Management Technology graduates who have an interest in self-employment will easily run their businesses.
