Head, Department of Physics.

Our Vision and Mission

The vision and mission of the Physics Department, Federal University of Technology, Owerri is to produce a new kind of physics manpower that possesses planning, adaptive, technical, maintenance, developmental and productive skills in the physics “professional area. This new kind of physics manpower will have the capacity not only to understand, use and adapt existing technology, but also improve on it, develop new ones and would be immediately productive in any venture or gainful employment.

Brief History of the Department

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri was formally inaugurated in 1981 on a temporary site, the Lake Nwaebere Campus, which was originally meant for the Federal Government Girls’ College, Owerri. Under the then School of Natural and Applied Sciences (SNAS), each programme area was under a Director who was responsible to the Dean of the School. The Department of Physics was one of the first programmes to be established under the Physical Sciences programmes area with Prof. A. Nduka as the Director. Lectures started in this school in October 1981. The Schools at this time constituted the basic operating units of the University’s academic organization and planning. Each School had different programme areas, each of which had a number of specific degree programmes.

Lectures in the Physics Programmes commenced in the year 1981/82 with 2 students (who later graduated in the 1985/86 Session with B.Tech. degree in Industrial Physics) and a few academic staff: Professor A. Nduka, Dr M. Munroe, Dr J. C. Osuwa, Dr B. N. Onwuagba, Dr M. N. Agu, and Mr S. K. X. Howusu.

In the 1988/89 session, the above academic structure was formally abandoned; the school was renamed School of Science (SOSC) and the Physics programme attained the status of a full-fledged academic department with new curricula based on the NUC approved Benchmark for minimum academic standards. Consequently, during the NUC Academic Accreditation Visitation in 1990, the Department of Physics with 7 academic staff, 4 PhD’s and 3 M.Sc’s and some good physical and infrastructural facilities earned the INTERIM Accreditation status for its academic programmes. Today, the Department has FULL Accreditation being the outcome of the NUC Academic Accreditation Visitation in 2007.

In 1993, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri moved from its temporary site at the Lake Nwaebere campus to its permanent site at Owerri West LGA. The Department on its own was able to dismantle its laboratories, including equipment and materials at the Lake Nwaebere campus and re-assembled them at the permanent site, a feat achieved via the sustained efforts of the then Chief Technologist, Mr S. O. Omotosho and his technical team.

The staffing position of the Department of Physics has since improved markedly. The academic staff strength is presently thirty-two (32) which include 17 PhDs and 15 M.Scs. The Department also has five (5) graduate assistants who are presently doing their M.Sc in Physics. The total student enrolment has now reached 517. In addition, the Department has 2 administrative officers, 2 Computer operators, and 3 Clerical officers. The Laboratories are manned by 1 Chief Technologist, 2 Deputy Chief Technologists, 1 Senior Technologist, 7 Technologists II, 1 Chief Laboratory supervisor, 1 Assistant Chief Laboratory Supervisor, and 4 Laboratory assistants.

Achievements

Some significant fundamental and applied research contributions have been recorded by the research groups of the Department in the areas of theoretical physics, experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics, semiconductor physics, materials science and astrophysics. Most of the research findings have been published in highly reputable international journals. Many of our academic staff have won international laurels, e.g. fellowships of the AbdusSalam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)International Committee of Scientific Unions (ICSU), World Bank Nigerian Institute of Physics, Solar Energy Society of Nigeria, etc. We have been very active in national and international conferences and workshops, e.g. Nigerian Institute of Physics, National Mathematical Centre, Regional Workshops on Nanoscale Science and on Lasers in Ghana and Summer Workshops on Condensed Matter Physiscs at the Abdus Salam ICTP, Trieste, Italy.

We have been in the executive committee of the Physics Writers Series Creation (formally the Nigerian Universities Physics Series) since 2002 and also on the Board of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council as well as the Council of the Nigerian Institute of Physics and the Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

In university administration, the current 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RD&I) are both from Physics Department.  We have previously produced a Vice-Chancellor for the University, three (3) Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Dean of the School of Science (two times), a pioneer Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, University Admissions Officer, Directors and Deputy Directors of various University centers and members of University council.

As a result of the high productivity of its academic staff, the Department now has on its staff a total of 8 full professors. Among the full Professors is a product of this Department in the person of Prof. B. C. Anusionwu. It is also pertinent to point out that in 1987, Prof. A. Nduka became the second Vice-Chancellor of this University. Many members of academic staff, includingthe late Prof. B. N. Onwuagba, Prof. F. C. Eze, Prof. C. E. Akujor, Prof. B. C. Anusionwu, Prof. I. C. Ndukwe, Prof. I.M. Mejeha, Prof. C. E. Orji, Prof. (Mrs) C.A. Madu and Prof. D.D.O. Eya have been appointed External Examiners to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of many Nigerian Universities.

Many of our recent graduates have won overseas scholarships and are studying in some of the best Universities in Europe and USA, such as: Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; Universities of Konstanz and Stuttgart, Germany, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts, Bridge Port University, Connecticut, USA, Sheffield Hallam University UK. Some time ago, a student of our Department – Mr. Abdulwahab came first in the aptitude test organized by Schlumberger Oil Services Company for students going on industrial training in the whole country. Many of our graduates have also won competitive job placements and have attained executive and international staff cadres in diverse key industries such as Sclumberger, Shell Petroleum Development Company, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, Saipen Engineering Company, Banks, Insurance Companies, etc. Indeed, employers have attested to the high performance of our graduates at their jobs.

We are not resting on our oars, however. We are striving hard to attain our set millennium strategic goals by regularly reviewing our curricula for better service delivery and to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.
