This is a Department that offers two options that are interrelated. These options are Pure Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry option.

The Pure Chemistry option is an option that prepares a student for thorough basic research which can be applied in medicine, Biotechnology, Physics and Engineering areas. It can be applied in these various areas because there is in-depth   mathematical treatment of all the courses and topics. This mathematical treatment in pure Chemistry does not exclude the biophysics of life expressions. The research area involves the assessment of the bioactive and probable industrial raw material components of natural   product extracts and their application to improve the human health and the environment. Graduates are exposed to work in life science such as pharmaceuticals, clinical diagnosis and surface applications during material development.

Industrial Chemistry option emphasizes on the chemical application in other areas of life such as in oil and other chemical industries. We work on marginal field development applying micro emulsion Technologies.  A lot of effort is made in study of climate changes by GIS application to pollution studies. We have been able to apply other aspects such as artificial intelligence procedure in optimum evaluations as well as Mat- Lab series in optimization.

Our vision is to be a world class department known by its high reputation in teaching and research that enhances excellence, innovation and discovery thereby attracting high class students and staff worldwide.  Graduates of Chemistry Department are expected to be productive members in our National Economic Development and any other country they find themselves.  In this way every graduate of this department will produce his or her full capacity in areas such as oil exploration, mineral processes, mining and in government economic analysis.  Therefore, a graduate of department of chemistry is a person who will be able to function to full capacity in contributing to further development of this country.

Mission

Our courses are designed such that the students are not only given basic understanding of material transformation but they are also grounded and equipped with the capacity to add value to existing material management.  We aspire to values which are based on the highest professional and academic standards in terms of personal growth and satisfaction offered to our staff and students and also teamwork that is based on respect, trust and integrity, and innovation to promote growth and value to our research sponsors.

A Brief History of the Department

The Academic programme of Chemistry Department started in 1981 under the Chemical Sciences and Technology sub-discipline.  This sub-discipline was one of the five programme areas in the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, SNAS. The Chemistry Department headed by DR. C.I. Anunuso started Academic Activities in 1981/82 session with 18 students.  These pioneer students graduated during the 1985/86 session with B.Tech. (Hon.) degree in Industrial Chemistry.

As consequence of reorganizations, the Industrial Chemistry programme area attained the status of an Academic Department in 1988/89 session.  The academic curricula were based on the NUC Minimum Academic Standards. During the first Accreditation Visitation by NUC between 10th and 14thDecember, 1990, the Department of Chemistry earned full accreditation status for two options of Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) in Pure Chemistry and B. Tech. in Industrial Chemistry.  In the 1997/98 session, the Department of Chemistry graduated seventy (70) candidates in these two degree options compared with eighteen (18) candidates in 1988/89.  In 2005/2006 academic session the final year class contained 216 candidates out of which 111 candidates graduated. Since then, the Department has been graduating students between 100 and 200 in number up to last graduation.

History of the Postgraduate Programme in the Department

Post Graduate Programmes in Analytical Chemistry leading to the M.Sc and Ph.D were approved by Senate for the Department of Chemistry in 1990. In 1992 Programmes in Mineral Processing leading to M.Sc and Ph.D were approved by Senate. In 2002 Programmes in Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry leading to degrees of M.Sc and Ph.D were approved by Senate. In 2007, programmes in Environmental Chemistry, leading to M.Sc and Ph.D were approved by Senate. Other programmes approved in the same package with Environmental Chemistry were:  M.Sc/M.Tech in Chemical Quality Control and Industrial Safety and PGD Programmes in Environmental Chemistry and in Quality Control for Chemical Industries. Accordingly the student registration has increased from three (3) in 1989 to fifty six (56) in 2013. The Department is obliged to manage this growth process responsibly and positively.

Academic Programme

Two academic undergraduate programmes are approved by the Senate for the Department of Chemistry.  These are programmes leading to B. Tech. (Honours) in Industrial Chemistry and B. Tech. (Honours) in Pure Chemistry.  A minimum of Ten (10) semesters are required to graduate and a maximum of fourteen (14) semesters are required to graduate in either of the two options.

HIGHER DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN (PGD, M.Sc, Ph.D)

The following higher degrees are approved by the Senate for the Department of Chemistry.The Department of Chemistry offers Postgraduate Programmes leading to the award of Degrees/Certificates in the following categories:

Chemical Quality Control and Industrial Safety

A minimum of Four (4) semesters are required to graduate and a maximum of Six (6) semesters are required to graduate in M.Sc./M.Tech.

  2. Environmental Chemistry

A minimum of Two (2) semesters are required to graduate and a maximum of four (4) semesters are required to graduate in PGD.

UTME ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

SSCE/GCE/NECO/FUTO PRE-DEGREE: O-level with credit passes in at least 5 subjects including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and English Language at not more than two sittings.

UTME: Subjects approved are English Language, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

 

  • DIRECT ENTRY REQUAIREMENTS

Holders of OND (ND) and JUPEB Certificates with minimum of Upper Credit pass are eligible for admission into Year II provided that their programmes cover certain basic courses offered in the school up to the second year.  Holders of HND with minimum of Upper Credit pass are eligible for admission into year III, depending on the appropriateness of their requisite academic qualification. 

In addition to fulfilling the requirements, a holder of OND (ND) and/or HND must also have five GCE ‘O’ Level credit passes including Mathematics and English language, and any other two relevant science subjects. Holders of NCE certificates, lower credits in OND/HND diploma certificates from other universities, and non-approved mono-technics /polytechnics by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) are not eligible at the moment for admission into Chemistry options.

Admission Requirements for Postgraduate Programme

  • Post Graduate Diploma (PGD)

Candidates seeking admission into PGD courses are required to possess B.Sc (Hons) or B. Tech. (Hons) degree in the Physical, Biological or Agricultural Science of any accredited university. A Pass degree may be considered subject to the recommendations based on the Transcript. HND in LaboratoryTechnology or any Applied Sciences may also be considered.

Candidates admitted into PGD programmes may be required to take some courses at the undergraduate level in order to remedy any deficiency observed in their transcript. Grades scored in such remedial courses shall not form any part of the basis for the evaluation of the postgraduate diploma programmes for such candidates. PGD candidates who scored a required mimimum may be admitted in to the M.Sc programmes on application and due consideration. Students are required to take some basic undergraduate courses in Chemistry as listed below:

Courses in Harmattan Semester:

  1. Heterocyclic Chemistry    CHM 401 (3 units)
  2. Co-ordination Chemistry CHM 403 (2 units)
  3. Molecular Spectroscopy   CHM 407 (2 units)

Rain Semester:

  1. Instrumental method of analysis ICH 508 (3 units)

 

  • M.Tech

Candidates seeking admission into M.Tech programmes must satisfy the following admision requirements: B.Sc (Hons) or B.Tech (Hons) degree in physical, biological or Agricultural sciences and a PGD in chemistry may also apply. Admission shall be subject to recommendations based on the candidate’s transcript.

  • M.Sc

For all programmes leading to the award of M.Sc candidates must have B.Sc (Hons) or B.Tech (Hons) degree in chemistry with a minimum of second class lower division from a recognized university. An official transcript of the candidate’s performance shall be required by the Admission Board. Admission shall be based on the quality of the Transcript.

  • PhD Programme

A candidate must hold a Master’s degree in the cognate area (with at least a CGPA of 4.0 on a scale of 5 or a score average of 60% of the Awarding Institution or other such qualification as senate may from time to time recognize.

A candidate with degree of Professional Masters (M.Tech., M.Eng., M.Agric) may qualify for admission provided they satisfy the conditions above.

  1. Candidates admitted to the PhD shall be required to pass at least nine credit (9) units of courses recommended by the Departmental Postgraduate Committee.
  2. A candidate for PhD is expected to deliver an expository seminar based on possible research topics. Such seminar shall define clearly the objective of the study, record of current activities in the subject area, a well-designed experimental plan designating scope and evaluation procedure,  instrumentation required and possible result expected; Expected contribution to knowledge.

  • A successful Accreditation hosting:  6th – 8th October, 2019 which involved laboratory refurbishing with a restoration of electrical and plumbing services.
  • Successful computation of graduating students’ results.
  • Departmental staff strength increased by (19) nineteen currently. Thirteen (13) teaching, Technologists four (4) and non-teaching (2).
  • The Department graduated twenty seven (27) students, with one (1) first class graduate out of 94 candidates in the 2018/2019 500L class.
  • The Department admitted 158 candidates for 2018/2019 Academic Session.
  • Six (7) staff in the Department are undergoing their PhD.

Students’ Chemical Society of Nigeria (SCSN), FUTO Chapter

The Department has a student’s association known as “STUDENTS’ CHEMICAL SOCIETY”, Federal University of Technology Owerri and herein after addressed as “CHEMSOC”.

The motto is “Chemistry Recreates Nature”.

The association is the student’s body affiliated to similar external professional body, Chemical Society of Nigeria.

Fundamental Aims and Objectives

  • To respect the constitution of the Students Union Government, Federal University of Technology, Owerri and the rule of law of all constituted authority of CHEMSOC FUTO chapter.
  • To foster unity among chemistry students.
  • To identify and find solutions to problem common to members.
  • To promote the study of chemistry through joint effort.
  • To propagate, advance and uplift the chemical involvement in our industry .
  • To maintain and encourage cordial and fruitful relationship amongst all her members, affiliates and those in related fields, irrespective of country, state, religion, sex or political statue.
  • To maintain and protect  the image of the members.
  • To gain academic and professional recognition, further advanced courses in technology and other related fields in higher institution both in Nigeria and elsewhere.
