School of Information and Communication Technology (SICT)

Welcome to the School of Information and Communication Technology

Welcome Message from the Dean

You are welcome to the School of Information and Communication Technology, which is the newest school at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). ICT still remains the main driver of economic development of countries. The appropriate use of ICT is a game-changer that can quickly fast-track sustainable development in all human endeavours in Nigeria. Unfortunately, there are skills gaps in this area. Consequently, the University Senate, at its 440th meeting held on 30th August 2018 approved the establishment of the School of Information and Communication Technology.

The new School of Information and Communication Technology (SICT), will have the following four departments: Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity and Software Engineering.  The University formerly had the Department of Computer Science in the School of Physical Sciences; and the Department of Information Technology (IT) in the School of Management Technology. The production of graduates with expertise in the fields of Cybersecurity and Software Engineering has become crucial because, as cyberspace applications are increasing rapidly, so are the potential consequences of cyber-attacks and exploits. Hence, the establishment of this new School will open up new opportunities that will make it imperative for allocation of adequate resources to these departments for the development of capacity for the protection of the Cyberspace, nationally and internationally.

The vision and mission of the School are:

Vision

To be a leader in Computing and Information Technology Education, Research and Innovation in Africa.

Mission

To provide the requisite administrative leadership and framework for the departments in the School to be able to achieve excellence in teaching and learning for the production of highly skilled graduates in the fast-growing ICT fields. Additionally, to promote research activities and innovation culture for solving national and global problems through workshops, conferences, seminars, symposia, and collaboration with relevant industry partners.

In line with the Vice-Chancellor’s Driving the Culture of Excellence mantra, the Dean’s office will work hard to motivate staff and students to achieve set targets for optimal productivity and fulfilment. We welcome all stakeholders who want to partner with us in achieving our vision and mission.

Warmest Regards.
