FUTO Health Services Department Performs its first Caesarean Section Operation

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri successfully carried out her maiden caesarean section operation at the newly renovated Health Services Department on Thursday, February 7, 2019.
An elated Dr J.K. Aguocha who is the Director of Health Services Department said though the manpower has always been there, there has not been a caesarean operation because the will of the patients were lacking. He said people’s faith in the Department have been restored because of the qualitative healthcare delivery they are receiving since the renovation by the 7th Substantive Vice-Chancellor Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Eze. He stated that Management has given its support to the advancement being made by providing a new generating set to ensure 24-hour power supply and services.
“With state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in place, surgery of minor and intermediate procedures is being carried out regularly,” Dr Aguocha pointed out. He stated that with the support of Management, the Department is poised to undertake major surgeries like laparotomy in the near future. He noted that even with the absence of students on campus because of the industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), there is a constant increase in the patient load of the facility because members of the host communities have seen for themselves the distinctive medical care they receive.
Speaking before the caesarean section, the patient, Mrs Bright Glory, a student of the University of Calabar said she was optimistic of a successful operation because of the excellent healthcare she received throughout her antenatal period.
The surgery, which was carried out by Dr Emeka Obioha, a specialist gynaecologist with over twenty-one year’s post qualification experience, brought out the baby after eight minutes with the help of competent nursing officers, Lillian Ononuju and Patience Mejuru as well as the Coordinator, Health Services Department Dr Mrs Ngozi Okereke. The baby girl who weighed 3.8kg and her mother was as at the time of this report, in stable condition.
