Biography

Engr. Dr Kevin Chinwuba Igwilo joined the Federal University of Technology, Owerri on February 4, 1998, as a Lecturer II. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department. He is one of the founding Lecturers of the Department when Petroleum Engineering was newly carved out from Chemical/Petroleum Engineering Department. Engr. Dr Kevin Chinwuba Igwilo has both oil field and classroom experience. He is a gifted lecturer, has produced 52 scientific papers in archival journals, 1 International University textbook on drilling fluids published in Germany by Lambert, 3 patented inventions in the area of drilling fluids. He has supervised one PhD student project, ten Master student projects, and about two hundred undergraduate projects. He is a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers and duly registered by the Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN). He holds a Bachelor degree in Petroleum Engineering, Master degree in Petroleum Engineering and a Doctoral degree in Petroleum Engineering (Drilling Option). He is also a very seasoned oil field Petroleum Engineer, Mud Engineer per excellence, with over 25years experience that borders around drilling of oil and gas wells, spans across all aspects of Drilling fluids, Completion fluids, Cementing, Mud logging, Petroleum Chemistry and Wellhead operations. He had worked in Nigerian offshore and deepwater operations, Ghanaian deepwater operations,  Jubilee field, Guinea deepwater offshore for oil and gas exploration, Qatar offshore (Persian Gulf), UK offshore (South of the North Sea).

Career Objectives:  To use my gifted skill and competence in the development of human and material resources. My desire is to develop students to be the best among equals using my in-depth oil field and classroom experience.

Oil Field Experience

Schlumberger (UAE)  – Drilling Fluids Instructor   –   27th Oct 2011 (Call off)

I trained Directional Drilling Engineers on drilling fluids modules in Schlumberger centre Abu-Dhabi.  The effects and solutions of hydrate formation, shallow water/gas flow, the effects of cold on synthetic base fluid, and generally drilling fluids for deepwater drilling operations is shared with the participants during the training session.

Baker Hughes Inc.  – Drilling Fluids Engineer    –    8th July 2012 – 20th May 2015

While in the field, Responsible for:

  • Drilling the deepest HPHT well in Nigeria of TVD 17524ft, ANGO-2ST, Majestic rig for CONOIL, an indigenous oil company.
    Design and implement various drilling and completion fluid systems E.g. Bentonite Spud Mud, KCl/Polymer, PHPA’s & Glycol systems, CaBr Mud (Solids Free), CaCO3/KCl Polymer Mud, Synthetic-Oil Base systems, Drill-in-Fluids, and various Brine systems, etc. at clients’ well sites including  Deep offshore, Swamp and Land Rig operations as per program.
  • Work together with the well-site Operator Rep to plan, project and implement fluids operations needs and sequence.
    Perform well site fluid test, pilot test and Mud formulations.
    Timely recognition and accurate diagnosis of likely wellbore problems; Recommend and implement fluid treatment as needed.
    Management and maintenance of well-site fluids products (Chemicals) Inventory and HSE-Requirements for same.
  • Supervise the mixing of mud (Drilling and Completions fluids) at the well-site LMP.

Mi Swaco UK  –  Senior Drilling Fluids Engineer 20th Dec 2010 – 24th June 2012

While in the field, Responsible for:

  • I work in Mi Swaco through UK Oil Consultants Ltd., I designed and implemented various drilling fluids for UK North Sea, ran Glycol Salt Saturated system, and LOBM for Dana Petroleum/Senergy, Appraisal well, South of the North Sea using Ensco 80 rig. I also ran Polymer mud and LOBM for deepwater offshore Gulf of Guinea for AGR, Jasper rig, exploratory well. I carried out the logistic of the ordering of materials, daily report, and technical advice to the Company man concerning the drilling fluids/hole cleaning. Our major challenge was the flocculation of WBM due to H2S.
