Mission

The mission of the School of Engineering & Engineering Technology is to identify scientific problems and needs of the Society and profer solutions to them through high-skilled scientific teaching and groundbreaking research.

History

The School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) was established in 1982. The School like other schools in the University has different programmes areas with specific degree programmes. At inception, the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology had six programmes namely;

  1. Agricultural Engineering and Engineering Technology
  2. Petroleum Engineering and Engineering Technology
  3. Civil Engineering and Engineering Technology
  4. Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Engineering Technology
  5. Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Technology
  6. Materials and Metallurgical Engineering and Engineering Technology

The School has grown over the years to its current capacity of 10 Departments. The School was established with the aim of providing in-depth academic/practical training in the student’s professional area of interest with extensive practical exposure to broad Engineering discipline and practical Engineering Techniques so as to produce graduates that are sound in their professional field while possessing easily identifiable and readily applicable expertise. In other to broaden and increase the horizon of their academic and practical training, the students are exposed to courses in social sciences, humanities and management during their stay in the University. There are presently 10 programme areas/departments that make up the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology. They are as follows:

  1. Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering (ABE)
  2. Chemical Engineering (CHE)
  3. Civil Engineering (CIE)
  4. Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)
  5. Food Science and Technology (FST)
  6. Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME)
  7. Mechanical Engineering (MEE)
  8. Mechatronics Engineering (MCE)
  9. Petroleum Engineering (PET)
  10. Polymer and Textile Engineering (PTE)

The various departments also offer Post Graduate degrees such as PGD, M.Eng, M.Sc, PhD.

The school of Engineering is currently housed in the Engineering complex building. Though some departments like Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering are resident in their own buildings. Administratively, the school is headed by the Dean who is assisted by the Associate Dean, with the Heads of various Departments in the school coordinating the affairs of the departments and reporting to the dean. The Dean also has a retinue of administrative officers and their support staff in his team.

Strategic Plan 2017 to 2022

Preamble

Engineers create jobs and drive the prosperity and knowledge-driven economy of a nation through research, innovation and technology development. In the face of the changing world and the 21st-century challenges, engineering education should be redesigned to be able to address the century’s challenges. Thus, the objective of transforming our engineering education is to equip our engineering students with contemporary technological competencies to create solutions for the 21st-century challenges as they come. To achieve this, a five-year strategic plan has been developed and includes our vision, mission, core values and strategic goals which stand out to guide our initiative. The plan will serve as the measuring stick to evaluate our decisions over the next five years. It will define the route for the journey to our destination.

Motto:

Transforming Engineering Education for the 21st-Century Challenges.

On the 19th of October 2017, the Board of Studies of the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) held a meeting to assess the progress of the School over the past academic years. During the meeting, an outline of the first strategic plan was developed with input from stakeholders (faculty, staff and students). This plan was made with the intent to build our students and faculty on the foundation of excellence to be global leaders in learning, research and innovation across the diverse world of engineering. In so doing, it is our expectation that our faculty and students will convert ideas to reality, provide solutions to society’s needs and enhance the economic development and quality of life of the citizens of our nation and humankind. In the plan, the vision, mission, core values and strategic goals of the faculty were re-emphasized, expressing the future of the faculty over the next 5 years.

To be a world-class faculty of engineering recognized for advanced  competencies in basic and applied research, educational and technological innovation, technology incubation and transfer as well as entepreneurial skills for service service to mankind. Thus, our Faculty of engineering prides itself on the slogan

“Our VISION is RITE (Research, Innovation, Technology and Entepreneurship)”.

Mission

To transform engineering education through teaching, research and innovation which incorporates local content initiative for effective training and inspiration to students who would contribute to the creation, application and transfer of engineering knowledge needed to drive national economic development.

Our values are in line with those of the University, and they are summarized as follows:
  • Excellence;
  • Creativity and Innovation;
  • Inclusiveness and collegiality;
  • Integrity and accountability;
  • Strategic thinking and value-driven risk-taking;
  • Collaboration and diversity;

Above all, we consider Students First in all we do.

Our plan is framed around the following four(4) strategic goals:
  • To develop a critical mass of well-trained engineering professionals with contemporary technological competencies to address the 21st-century challenges;
  • To set up standard engineering laboratories and workshops with modern facilities and also improve the operations based on global best practices;
  • To conduct research that would catalyze economic growth and encourage entrepreneurial ventures;
  • To initiate and strengthen value-driven industry-academia

The Faculty of Engineering has developed a five-year implementation framework to deliver strategic plans. Through the implementation strategies, progress will be evaluated and goals with timelines revised as situations change. Strategic goals and their implementation initiatives are given in Table 1.

Table 1: Strategic goals and their implementation plan of action

Strategic goalImplementation plan
