FROM THE DEAN’S DESK

Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri started as a Programme Area in the 1982/1983 Academic year. It acquired the status of a Department in 1988 with specialization in three options namely Communications Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering and Power Systems Engineering. The philosophy of the Department, in addition to the philosophy of the University, was to produce self-reliant graduates who will use technology for service to humanity. Recently, the University Management, in view of the need for specialization and increasing demand for admissions into the Department, considered it necessary to establish a completely autonomous School from the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) dedicated to the study of Electrical System related Engineering courses named School of Electrical Systems Engineering Technology (SESET). The School is to house the following Departments:

  1. Department of Computer Engineering (CME)
  2. Department of Electrical (Power Systems) Engineering (EPE)
  3. Department of Electronic Engineering (ELE)
  4. Department of Mechatronic Engineering (MCE)
  5. Department of Telecommunications Engineering (TCE)

Why School of Electrical Systems Engineering Technology (SESET)?

As a full-fledged School, SESET will draw strength from the fact that FUTO brand is popular in Nigeria due to the excellent performance of graduates of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the Industries and society at large. This has made applications for admission into Electrical and Electronic Engineering to constantly be on the increase over the years. As a Department, Electrical and Electronic Engineering have limited carrying capacity in terms of the number of applicants (candidates) that could be admitted such that very good and bright ones that scored very high in the JAMB UTME were unavoidably denied admission. By creating School of Electrical Systems Engineering Technology with Five Departments, at least 20% of these candidates seeking admission into Electrical and Electronic Engineering related Departments will be offered admission. This will help the University to maintain its strength as a leading brand in Nigeria.

To attain excellence in all scholastic endeavours and establish the School as a front-runner in producing globally competent Computer, Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic and Telecommunications Engineers, Innovators, Researchers and Entrepreneurs that will make an impact in the world economy through disruptive research and innovation ecosystems.

  • To provide the requisite technical and administrative leadership model for the Departments to achieve excellence in teaching, learning and research for the generation of competent and skilled graduates that will be readily employable.
  • To facilitate core research engagements, collaborations and innovation towards addressing societal challenges via Industry-Academia collaborations and technical conferences.
  1. To train skilled manpower that can imbibe and leverage modern technological techniques to innovate and sustain National Technological Advancement of the future, that is, graduates that are ready to move from classroom straight to the industry with little or no further training.
  2. To develop specialized curriculums for the Departments in Embedded Systems designs, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and Very Large Scale Integrations (VLSI) of electronic circuits and advanced computing technologies like VHDL (Very High-Speed Hardware Descriptive Language), Verilog and AI Engines. The curricula will also include fundamentals and applications of electrical power engineering in the areas of energy efficiency methods, optimization techniques of renewable energy systems, and development of new power systems technology.
  3. To give priority to Electronic Product Development (EPD) which will involve the acquisition of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) machine and the use of Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Engineering (CAD/CAE) tools to produce Telecommunications experts who will be involved in the design and implementation of Satellite communication subsystems, Mobile Communication subsystems, Radio Frequency subsystems, Fibre Optics Networks, Radar and Navigation Systems.
  4. To take the leading edge in Systems Automation and Robotic smart systems, Digital Manufacturing and 3D printing, in the era of Industry 5.0.
  5. To develop disruptive techniques and strategies in Reverse Engineering for effective technological penetrations.
  6. To maintain synergy with the Alumni in Diaspora for the growth of the School by harnessing their expertise in the development of younger and future generation.
  1. Develop capabilities that will move Nigeria from depending on minerals and hydrocarbons to being driven by the knowledge power of electrical and electronic principles.
  2. Skilled manpower that can imbibe, understand and be capable to use modern technological techniques to innovate and sustain national technological advancement of the future.
  3. Graduates that are ready to move from the classroom straight to the industry with little or no further training.
